Prepare to Share: Why You Cannot Give What You Do Not Have
Have you ever tried pouring water from an empty pitcher? It’s an obvious impossibility. You can tilt the jug, strain, and hold it over the glass as long as you want, but if there is nothing inside, nothing is coming out.
Yet, in our daily lives—whether as parents, leaders, friends, or Christians—we constantly try to do the exact same thing. We try to pour out love, peace, wisdom, and strength when our own internal reservoirs are bone dry.
There is an unshakeable spiritual law that governs our ability to impact others: You cannot give what you do not have. If you want to share something meaningful with the world, you must first prepare your own heart to receive it.
The Principle of the “Heart’s Store”
Jesus addressed this exact concept in Luke 6:45:
“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
Think of your heart as a spiritual warehouse. Everything you consume—what you read, what you focus on, how much time you spend in prayer, the attitudes you entertain—gets placed on the shelves of your storehouse.
When life puts pressure on you, or when someone comes to you needing help, you can only hand them what’s already sitting in your inventory. If you haven’t stored up grace, truth, and patience, you’ll find yourself reaching for empty air when others need it most.
You Can’t Borrow Spiritual Readiness at the Last Minute
In Matthew 25, Jesus tells the Parable of the Ten Virgins. Five were wise and brought extra oil for their lamps, while five were foolish and brought none. When the bridegroom arrived late in the night, the foolish virgins asked to borrow oil from the wise.
The wise virgins replied, “No, there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.”
It might sound harsh at first glance, but it reveals a profound truth: certain things cannot be borrowed.
- You cannot borrow someone else’s personal relationship with God.
- You cannot borrow someone else’s conviction during a crisis.
- You cannot instantly whip up years of spiritual depth on a moment’s notice.
Preparation is personal. You have to cultivate your own supply of “oil” before the dark night arrives.
Ministry Flows from the Overflow, Not the Bottom of the Barrel
In Acts 3:6, when a lame man asked Peter and John for money, Peter famously replied:
“Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”
Peter didn’t try to fake what he didn’t possess. He couldn’t offer financial aid because he didn’t have it. But because he was filled with the power and authority of the Holy Spirit, he could offer life-changing healing.
Notice the pattern: He gave what he had.
David wrote in Psalm 23:5, “My cup overflows.” The healthiest way to serve others isn’t by scraping the bottom of an exhausted barrel. God’s design is for us to be so filled by His Word and Spirit that our service to others is simply the overflow of a full cup.
How to Prepare Your Heart to Share

- Audit Your Inventory: Look at what comes out of your mouth during stressful moments. That’s your indicator of what’s currently sitting in your heart’s storehouse.
- Prioritize Daily Input: Before you try to feed anyone else spiritually or emotionally, spend time letting God feed you through Scripture and prayer.
- Protect Your Reserves: You aren’t being selfish by taking time to recharge spiritually; you are keeping your pitcher full so you actually have something to pour out when the time comes.
